This is a 9-month adjunct position in the Nursing & Allied Health Division.
Position Summary:
This position is primarily responsible providing clinical supervision of student clinical experience in the Surgical Technology program. Under the supervision of the Surgical Technology Program Director, the primary responsibility of this position is to provide supervision of student learning while maintaining a positive learning environment in the clinical setting, and to ensure proper documentation and evaluation of clinical performance of students. The Clinical Adjunct faculty are liaisons between the college and the clinical sites. The faculty responds to students in a timely manner and communicates with the discipline and division via college-provided tools and resources.
- Supervise and mentor Surgical Technology students during assigned clinical rotations.
- Serve as a liaison between the college, clinical affiliates, surgeons, and operating room staff.
- Monitor student progress and provide timely feedback regarding clinical performance and professional development.
- Complete required student evaluations, documentation, and progress reports in accordance with program policies.
- Facilitate student participation in surgical procedures to ensure achievement of clinical objectives and required competencies.
- Coordinate student assignments and movement between operating rooms and surgical services based on educational needs, case availability, and clinical site requirements.
- Advocate for student learning opportunities while maintaining positive working relationships with clinical partners.
- Ensure students adhere to program policies, clinical site regulations, safety standards, and professional expectations.
- Address student concerns and communicate significant issues to the Program Director in a timely manner.
- Attend program meetings, faculty development activities, and clinical site meetings as requested.
- Maintain current knowledge of surgical technology practices, clinical education standards, and accreditation requirements.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population.
- Performs other job-related duties and projects as assigned in support of the Program’s and College's mission, core values and goals
Minimum Qualifications:
- Be a graduate of an education program in Surgical Technology accredited by a nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency
- Possess a credential in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (CST Certification)
- Minimum total of 2 years’ experience, either in the operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or a combination of both within the past 5 years.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, surgeons and healthcare professionals.
- Previous teaching, precepting or clinical instruction experience preferred
Teaching Excellence and Program Innovation
- Collaborate with clinical site personnel, preceptors, and operating room staff to facilitate student participation in surgical procedures and ensure adequate clinical experiences that support program outcomes and competence achievement
- Coordinate student clinical assignments and surgical case exposure to ensure students meet required clinical competencies and gain experience across a variety of surgical specialties and procedures.
- Promote, support and participate in student retention, and other program and student outcome efforts.
- Attend required meetings scheduled at the College, Division, and Program levels to increase overall College and program instructional and outcome efforts.
- Report directly to the Surgical Technology Program Director and Clinical Coordinator, maintaining a positive and active relationship for the benefit of the program culture, students and the College and community.
