Title: Assistant Director of Accounting

Job Summary:

Responsible for assisting the Director of Accounting in implementing, supervising, organizing, planning, and directing the daily operations of the Office of Accounting; ensures timely, accurate reporting of financial activity for the college, and college foundation. Safeguards the institution’s property and provides superior service to the campus community and other customers. Supervises the accounts payable, bank reconciliation, and acts as liaison for payroll function. Performs other job-related duties relative to the area of responsibility.

Job Duties:

Assists the Director in the organization, administration, periodic review, planning, development, evaluation, and general effectiveness of the Office of Accounting. Takes on the role of Director of Accounting during the Director’s absence. Assists with the monthly and/or year-end closings of the accounting records for the main institution and college foundation. Assists in the preparation of the annual financial statements and supporting documents of the main institution and college foundation. Provides information for preparation of the foundation form 990 reporting. Responsible for the accuracy of information provided by the automated systems and for staff’s training in using those systems. Tests and implements enhancements and upgrades, as necessary. Works with internal and/or external auditors by supplying requested documents and explanations. Assists in ensuring departmental compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, and policies. Responsible for overseeing the recording, reporting and reconciliation of all plant funds, from internal and external sources, such as the State of Tennessee or Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) reports. Maintains confidentiality of information and works in accordance with FERPA privacy guidelines on the disclosure of information. Assist with budget(s) preparation and maintenance, as needed. Assists in preparation of reports and analyses for TBR and similar regulatory entities. Develops procedures to streamline departmental operation to increase efficiency. Assists in the selection, hiring, and training of new staff. Serves as liaison and works cooperatively and effectively with other departments (internal and external) as appropriate. Responsible for maintaining a good working relationship with the foundation’s management and staff. Communicates with management regarding the financial position status of the entity and other areas as requested. Coordinates with responsible party to maintain current and accurate departmental information on the website and other printed or on-line documents. Ensures internal controls are maintained to safeguard the assets. Responsible for overseeing the feeding of data from other systems (payroll, financial aid, and procurement card transactions, etc.) into financial system. Prepare journal entries; performs reconciliations of various financial accounts; and other accounting functions as required. Uses the report writer and other tools to generate reports as necessary. Serves as member on various college committees. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in accounting.
Four years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA), or equivalent.
Governmental accounting or auditing experience in higher education setting.
Experience with Banner or other Oracle based Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of principles and procedures of financial record keeping and reporting.
Skills in oral and written communications; office management skills, interpersonal skills consistent with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
Advanced skill level using Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, and Outlook), Internet and web-based systems.
Ability to troubleshoot, recognize and solve problems with software programs for end users. Confident in using own initiative, prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines.
Detail oriented with superior organizational and managerial skills.
Ability to interact comfortably and confidently with all levels of personnel, internal and external. Ability to initiate objectives with minimal supervision.
Ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situation and making decisions.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information.

Pay Rate: $56,881 - $71,101 annual salary depending on experience
