Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Physical Plant position is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and daily operations of the college’s physical facilities. Under the direction of the Director of Physical Plant, this role ensures that all buildings, grounds, and mechanical systems are maintained in a safe, efficient, and cost-effective manner. The Assistant Director supervises maintenance and grounds employees, oversees preventive maintenance programs, assists in budget preparation and management, and ensures compliance with safety and regulatory standards. This position plays a vital role in creating and maintaining an environment that supports the college’s mission of student success.

Job Duties

  • Assist the Director in planning, coordinating, and directing maintenance, repair, and improvement of all college facilities.
  • Supervise and evaluate maintenance and grounds staff, including scheduling work assignments and overseeing performance.
  • Monitor and coordinate preventive maintenance programs for mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, fire codes, and other federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Participate in budget preparation and monitor expenditures to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors on repairs, renovations, and capital projects.
  • Assist with planning and implementing sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Respond to emergency facility issues and serve in an on-call capacity, including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be willing to work during inclement weather.
  • Maintain records and reports related to maintenance activities, equipment, and compliance.
  • Serve as acting director in the absence of the Director of Physical Plant.
  • Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Five or more years facilities maintenance experience with two or more years supervisory
experience required.
Experience in general building, equipment, and grounds maintenance.
Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience in community college or higher education setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of methods, materials, and procedures used in general repair and
maintenance work.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
Ability to exercise good judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
