Position Announcement

Position Title: Associate Instructor – Building Construction Technology

 

The Tennessee College of Applied Technology Elizabethton is accepting applications for a full-time Associate Instructor to join our Building Construction Technology program at the Instructional Service Center at Kingsport. The successful candidate will bring extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in multiple construction trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, masonry (brick/block laying), painting, construction mathematics, workplace ethics, and safety. This position plays a vital role in preparing students for real-world employment by delivering relevant, practical instruction aligned with industry needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical and practical instruction in construction-related subjects using the approved program curriculum.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive lesson plans, instructional aids, and course materials.
  • Administer written and performance-based assessments to measure student progress.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, progress, and performance.
  • Develop and revise curriculum based on industry standards and feedback.
  • Actively recruit students and assist with job placement and follow-up support.
  • Maintain regular communication with business and industry partners and lead an active advisory committee.
  • Ensure the safe and efficient delivery of instruction in all shop and classroom activities.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and maintain current knowledge of trends in the construction industry.
  • Participate in program promotion, college events, and other duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required; post-secondary credential in construction or a related field is also required. Associate degree and/or technical diploma preferred.
  • At least three (3) years of verifiable hands-on experience in the construction field within the past five years.
  • Possession of (or ability to obtain within twelve [12] months) all required certifications, licenses, or accreditations relevant to the position.

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:        

  • Prior teaching or training experience in a construction-related setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to use instructional technology and computer applications effectively.

 KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Proficiency in construction techniques and safety practices.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to engage and motivate a diverse student population.
  • Competency with computer systems for instruction and student record keeping.
  • Commitment to professional growth and staying current in the field.
  • Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and a collaborative spirit.

SALARY: $55,983-$67,181 - Commensurate with Tennessee College of Applied Technology salary guidelines.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must be able to stand, bend, stoop, and lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Work is conducted in both classroom and lab/shop environments, including exposure to typical construction site tools, materials, and conditions.
  • Adherence to all safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements is expected.
