Job Summary

Reporting to the Dean of the Science Division, the Biology Instructional Coordinator is responsible for the oversight and coordination of the biology labs at off-campus sites (Elizabethton, Gray, and Kingsport). They will prepare, operate, and maintain labs each week, as well as provide instructional assistance to lab instructors and supervise student workers as needed. They develop laboratory schedules and outlines each semester, maintain laboratory inventories, and order supplies. The Biology Instructional Coordinator is responsible for teaching a minimum of seven (7) labs per week (two-hour sessions per lab).

Job Duties

• Oversee labs for all biology courses (BIOL 1010, 1020, 1110, 1120, 2010, 2020 and 2230 labs) at off-campus sites, and teach a minimum of seven (7) labs per week (two-hour sessions per lab)

• Prepare, operate, and maintain all labs on a weekly basis

• Provide instructional assistance to lab instructors

• Ensure each lab experiment has adequate supplies

• Maintain laboratory inventories and order supplies

• Develop lab policies and procedures

• Develop lab schedules and outlines each semester

• Oversee lab safety and ensure responsibility when handling hazardous chemicals and wastes, culturing potentially pathogenic bacteria, and working with open flames (Bunsen burners) as needed

• Supervise student workers as needed

• Perform minor repairs on laboratory equipment as needed

• Complete other assignments as directed by supervision

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Biology or related field from an accredited institution
• Two years of laboratory preparation and teaching laboratory courses at a secondary or post-secondary level

Preferred Qualifications

• Master of Science in Biology or related field from an accredited institution
• One year or more experience of cell culturing or teaching microbiology labs in a college or university setting
• Experience in curriculum development related to laboratory science
• Experience using learning management platforms (D2L/Brightspace, Canvas, Blackboard)
• Conversational ability or fluency in a second language

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Technology Skills: MS Office Suite; videoconferencing software; digital records management systems; general operating systems and data information systems
• Demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. Must have good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Must possess good interpersonal skills and professionalism to work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and student populations
• Exhibit professional demeanor, communication, and attire
• Must keep meticulous records
• Must be proficient in aseptic technique and have knowledge of bacterial culture requirements and quality control measures
• Must have extensive knowledge of laboratory procedures including DNA gel electrophoresis and bacterial transformation
