JOB SUMMARY

The Campus Grounds Technician assists the College in maintaining the campus grounds. In this position, a broad variety of work is performed in tasks such as but not limited to grounds/landscape/equipment maintenance; carpentry; painting; custodial services; and other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICIATIONS

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma.
  • Valid driver’s license.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Grounds & Landscape Maintenance (40%)

  • Perform routine groundskeeping tasks including mowing, trimming, pruning, and clearing debris from walkways and high-traffic areas.
  • Cultivate and maintain flower beds.
  • Perform sidewalk and parking lot upkeep as needed.

Equipment & Operations (20%)

  • Operate heavy machinery (e.g., mowers, tractors, forklift, skid steer loaders, etc.) safely and effectively.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance (e.g., replace fluids, bolt-on, belts, spark plugs, blades, filters, etc.) on landscaping equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and address minor equipment issues as they arise.

Safety & Chemical Handling (20%)

  • Assist with weeding and the application of restricted chemicals (e.g., herbicides/pesticides) under licensed supervision.
  • Follow all safety procedures and properly use required protective equipment (e.g., eyes, ears, breathing skin, hands, etc.).

General Support Duties (15%)

  • Safely move furniture, equipment, and materials as needed.
  • Assist with setup and breakdown of campus events, including tables, chairs, signage, and staging.

Non-Essential Functions (5%)

  • Actively participate in college functions as required by supervisor.
  • Assist with general maintenance tasks and support special events as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders.
  • Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.). to create documents, manage data, prepare reports, and support daily operations, as needed.
  • Knowledge of landscaping methods, materials, and standard operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of manual and power-driven tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety standards and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to perform job-related duties outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate an automatic or manual transmission vehicle.
  • Ability to respond effectively to severe weather events and related operational needs.
  • Preferred experience:
    • Grounds maintenance.

WORK ACTIVITIES & EQUIPMENT

Work activities routinely involve repetitive tasks such as walking, bending, and lifting equipment that can weigh between 25-50 pounds. Work activities include the use of landscaping tools, machinery, manual and power-driven tools, cleaning supplies and horticulture chemicals, personal computers, peripheral devices, etc.

JOB LOCATION

This on-site position is based in the Maintenance & Operations Department located in the Plant Operations Building on the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee. Occasional travel to off-campus sites at the McMinn Higher Education Center located in Athens, Tennessee and the Vonore Campus located in Vonore, Tennessee may be required.
