Job Summary

This is a full-time, fiscal year appointment reporting to the Manager of Career Services. The specialist delivers comprehensive professional career-related services to students, alumni, employers, faculty and staff.

Job Duties

  • Plans, promotes, organizes and oversees Career Fairs/Job Fairs and related special events in order to expand student/alumni employment opportunities.
  • Provides resume review, job search, mock interview, career assessment and career counseling services to students and alumni.
  • Assists with the annual Graduate Follow-up Report which determines the job placement rate for the college.
  • Contacts graduates to determine if they are working related to their major and extends assistance to those seeking employment.
  • Assists with special projects as necessary; performs other duties as assigned. Supports other division offices during registration, as needed.
  • Travels among the college's main campuses and centers and Memphis area businesses.
  • Occasionally works evening and weekend hours.
  • Serves as Cooperative (Co-op) Education program liaison and facilitates communications between participating employers, students, and faculty; oversees student enrollment, verifies employment, tracks progress, and collects necessary documentation.
  • Communicates with employers to collect Co-op student performance evaluations; distributes evaluations and student synthesis papers to the appropriate faculty for grade assignment.
  • Coordinates on-campus recruiting activities such as the Hilton College Program Internship.
  • Assists in the delivery of online employment-related services; learns new software, when necessary.
  • Communicates with employers regarding their hiring needs. Markets job opportunities to students and alumni.
  • Provides graduate job placement reports to faculty and staff to include employment information by major, degree/certificate, concentration, year, employer, etc.
  • Assists in administering the annual Employer Survey. Distributes surveys to employers; collects and compiles data.
  • Represents the department at various college and community events (Business Expo's, professional business organization meetings, area middle and high school Career Days, Southwest Club Day, etc.) in order to market the college and increase employment opportunities for students.
  • Prepares and delivers classroom presentations to familiarize students with Career Services.
  • Conducts job-readiness presentations to students, alumni, and the community.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area.
  • Two (2) years related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of career assessments, career development, hiring processes/procedures and job search resources
  • Knowledge of Southwest academic programs.
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and customer service skills.
  • Resume creation, interview, job search and presentation skills.
  • Microsoft (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Internet Research skills; Banner and Slate skills a plus.
  • General office equipment operations (photocopier,scanner, printer) skills.
  • Able to effectively communicate and interact with students, alumni, business professionals, faculty and staff.
  • Able to prioritize, organize, and multi-task in order to meet deadlines.
  • Able to plan, promote, organize and oversee Career Fairs and career-related special events. Able to advise students and alumni regarding career choice and assessments, job-readiness skills (resume writing, interviewing, job search, professional attire) and career development.
  • Able to learn new software programs, as needed, for improved delivery of services.
  • Able to produce various reports; detail-oriented.
