Salary: $46,750 - $56,100

Campus Location: Walters State Community College - Morristown Campus (Employees are assigned to a “home” location but may occasionally or regularly be required to work at other WSCC locations.)

Job Purpose: The purpose of this position is to perform skilled commercial carpentry work in the maintenance, repair, renovation, and construction of college facilities, furnishings, and fixtures on all campuses. This position supports the Facilities Management department by ensuring the college’s building learning environments are safe, functional, and well-maintained in accordance with building code requirements and OSHA regulations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Performs general maintenance and renovation tasks, including carpentry, wall patching, painting, and completing assigned work order requests. Assists with renovation of offices and classrooms, including demolition of structures; installs drywall, performs finishing work, and conducts minor plumbing repairs. Works on or from scaffolding as necessary to complete construction tasks.
  • Conducts tasks such as replacing or installing doors, hardware, windows, ceiling, and floor tiles.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions to complete construction and repair projects.
  • Estimates project requirements and prepares material lists for construction and maintenance work.
  • Construct forms for sidewalk pads and foundations, and perform concrete pouring and finishing.
  • Assists with basic masonry work, including laying block, brick, stone, and tile. 
  • Assist with setup for special events. Assists with snow and ice removal from sidewalks when needed, and responds to campus maintenance emergencies as needed. 
  • Completes required computer-based training and maintains compliance with institutional requirements. Submits accurate time cards in accordance with established deadlines. Regularly utilizes email and the college’s maintenance management software to receive assignments, update progress, and close out completed work orders in a timely manner. 
  • May perform other duties as required. 

Required Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or an equivalent certificate
  • Experience in general maintenance, construction work, and
  • Experience using general maintenance/construction hand tools, power tools, forklifts, etc.
  • Valid TN driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A technical school diploma/certificate or completion of a carpenter apprenticeship
  • 3 years prior maintenance/carpentry experience
  • Working knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards

Leadership & Supervisory: The incumbent has no responsibility for supervising others, nor for project direction and/or program administration. Tasks are somewhat varied, and so an immediate supervisor is available for consultation. Familiar work is expected to be performed with moderate supervision, with only periodic checks on progress and conformance with expectations.

Environment & Working Conditions: Frequent outdoor exposure to varying environmental conditions, including occasional extreme cold, frequent high heat, temperature fluctuations, noise, and high humidity levels.  There is a moderate chance of electrical shock, falls from ladders, chemical burns, and bodily injuries from power tools or lifting heavy materials. Occasionally requires accessing tight spaces through crawling in tight places in order to make repairs.

  • Ability to operate a vehicle
  • Ability to lift +/- 50 pounds repeatedly
  • Ability to operate power tools
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders and blueprints
