POSITION SUMMARY:

Serves as Grill Cook  – Multi-tasking skills on grill orders, maintain speed without compromising food quality, execute grill menu items to order, and assists with Food Service Director in various Cafeteria functions. A Grill Cook should have a passion for food, working in a fast-paced environment and demonstrate excellent organizational, communication, and time management.

Role will be responsible for the following:

  1. Sets up food service and kitchen areas, equipment and utensils, under detailed instruction and, in accordance with specific area needs; checks food temperatures and/or prepares areas for daily operations; may operate cooking or bakery equipment as assigned.
  2. Conveys food and supplies from the main kitchen, bakery, and/or salad preparation area to the serving site either by carrying or by utilizing a cart.
  3. Follows prescribed procedures in setting up hot and cold food lines; grill, hot bar, cold food holding equipment, front beverage/condiment line; chooses proper utensils and sets all food equipment to appropriate temperature for menu items.
  4. Prepares or assists in the preparation of hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, hot bar food items, stocking beverages, salads, sandwiches, simple bakery items, and/or other similar food items, as appropriate to the position.
  5. Serves food items to customers from counters and/or steam tables, in accordance with specific instructions, ensuring that appropriate portions are served, and adds garnishes according to instructions.
  6. Replenishes foods, silverware, plates and cutlery, dishes, and trays at serving stations; replenish all condiments.
  7. Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures disposition of spoiled or unattractive food, defective supplies/equipment, and/or other unusual conditions with Food Service Director permissions.
  8.  cleans, wash and maintains work areas, including spot sweeping floors, facilities, pots, pans, service ware, utensils, and equipment; as appropriate to the area of operation.
  9. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Holistic Student Support

  • Promotes, Supports, prepares, and executes all student activity catering events in partnership with student led departments.
  • Ensure that services and activities promote accessibility and reflect equity minded practices.
  • Creates partnerships with all campus departments to assist in meeting students’ needs

Fiscal Stewardship

  • Directly assists Food Service Director with responsible fiscal stewardship of the funds allocated to the Food Service Department
  • Maintains ongoing inventory of Grill equipment/maintenance
  • Assist in maintaining/monitoring food waste to minimize loss and maximize profit

Organizational Culture and Inclusive Practices

  • Provides support in the Food Service Department that aligns with the College’s values
  • Promotes the College’s goals related to organizational culture and belongingness and supports the Food Service Department’s efforts to utilize best practices to provide equity-minded services and support for students, faculty, staff and guests.
  •  Supports the Director of Food Services in continuous customer service excellency and the ability to train this to others in an effort to help promote department
  • Supports and helps to maintain an environment that is open, inviting, and professional; takes initiative and seeks advice on improvement.

Position Requirements

  • Highschool diploma or GED
  • Work experience: 2 years in Food Service Environment

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Schedule: Monday – Friday 6:30am-2:15pm
  • Bend, stoop, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling moderately heavy objects
  • Standing or walking for extended periods of time
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate kitchen equipment
  • Carrying, pushing or pulling food trays, carts, materials and supplies
  • Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally
  • Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge: Modern cooking methods, materials, and equipment used in food service; health department expertise in food preparation, storing and proper precautionary measures;
  • Skills: Oral and written communication for giving and following instructions/directions; interpersonal skills consistent with establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Abilities: Prepare quality food items; to evaluate situations and make decisions; perform manual tasks associated with food preparation and maintaining facility and equipment; perform duties in a timely manner; to adapt to changing work needs; excellent customer service skills.

Projected Salary Range: $14.57 - $17.11/ hour
