Job Summary

The Counselor/Success Coach is primarily responsible for providing personal counseling to students, particularly those experiencing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges. The role includes supporting students who seek services directly, as well as those who are referred, connecting students to appropriate campus and community resources, and collaborating with campus partners to provide holistic support services that promote student success and retention. Counseling is the primary function of this role. The Counselor/Success Coach will provide academic advising support during peak periods (e.g., registration) and as needed, but does not serve as a primary advisor. The Counselor/Success Coach facilitates workshops for students, staff, and faculty; provides consultation on students’ mental health concerns; and contributes to institutional efforts related to student retention and success. The Counselor reports to the Director of Student Advocacy Programs/Counselor.

Job Duties

• Provide personal counseling for students, particularly those experiencing social and emotional difficulties, and refer them to appropriate community and campus resources as needed.

• Develop and maintain relationships with community agencies, institutional programs, and resources that support students’ mental health, basic needs, and overall well-being.

• Offer consultation to faculty and staff on early identification of students in distress or crisis, and facilitate referrals to resources that promote student success.

• Assist in developing and delivering educational programs and workshops on mental health, wellness, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, sexual violence prevention, suicide prevention, and student success.

• Supervise graduate-level counseling and social work interns.

• Serve on Northeast State’s Care Team, a subcommittee of the Behavioral Intervention and Threat Assessment Committee

• Ensure confidentiality of client information in accordance with professional licensing standards and FERPA.

• Provide limited academic advising support during peak periods, including registration.

• Complete other assignments as directed by supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, or Social Work from an accredited institution.
  • Active clinical license in the state of Tennessee in the field of LPC, LCSW, LMSW or LMFT.
  • Three years of experience working in a mental health setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Working experience in higher education.
  • Experience providing counseling in a higher education setting.
  • Conversational ability or fluency in a language other than English.

Additional Notes

  • Travel required to all campus sites to provide counseling for students and outreach programs, and to attend local and state meetings for professional development.
