Job Summary

The Database Administrator will be responsible for the administration, maintenance, and optimization of the TBR hosted Banner database systems supporting the TBR Service Center. The DBA team at TBR manages and maintains the Ellucian Banner database and applications systems for the service center institutions, including Banner Student, Banner Finance, and Banner HR modules. The DBA role is responsible for collaborating with the DBA and IT team, institutional stakeholders, and end-users to ensure the efficient and reliable operation and performance of the Banner system and its related databases. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in Oracle database administration and possess expertise in managing, updating, and administering the Ellucian Banner System using modern practices.

This position offers the opportunity to work remotely, in Tennessee, with the occasional need to travel to the Central office and or College campuses for in person meetings.

Job Duties

  • 40% - Operations and maintenance of Banner, Oracle and/or other SQL based database systems including upgrading, patching, installation and configuration, and backup and recovery operations. Operations and troubleshooting Tomcat application server including upgrading, patching, installation and configuration, and application deployments. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Provide support to end users as needed with database issues, troubleshooting, special configurations, etc. Assist with the installation/configuration/maintenance of application server software and applications in an n-Tier environment that includes Tomcat and Apache. Application upgrades and reconfiguration based on application life cycle and product requirements. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Detect and facilitate restoration of database failure and other mission critical outages; insuring the consistency and integrity of file systems. Monitor and maintain backup systems that provide the means for ensuring the service level agreement is met for shortest time to recover. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Responsible, in cooperation with server administrators for the overall uptime of the system, ensuring that each system is accessible to end-users as is documented in its SLA. - (Essential)
  • 5% - User account maintenance and security reviews. Work with Human Resources and data owners regularly review roles and adjust permissions and privileges regarding changes. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Makes recommendations for continued improvements and provides technological solutions for system functionality and efficiency. - (Essential)
  • 10% - This position requires on-call duties after hours on a regular basis from a problem-solving perspective as well as installation or upgrades during off-hours, to minimize the impact on end-user's use of their systems. - (Essential)
  • 5% - User account maintenance and security reviews. Working with Human Resources and data owner’s regularly reviewing roles and adjusting permissions and privileges with regard to changes. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline with 3-4 years of job-related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Experience with basic server administration and technical support for Linux and Microsoft operating systems.
• Experience with RMAN or other database Backup and recovery tools
• Experience with Application Server platforms such as Oracle WebLogic Server and/or Apache Tomcat server.
• Understanding of virtual machines, IaaS, SaaS and cloud-based applications
• Shell programming expertise with automating processes

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Database Administrator, with a focus on Ellucian Banner system administration
• Familiarity with Ellucian Banner modules such as Banner Student, Banner Finance, and Banner HR
• Prior experience in the higher education industry or a similar environment is a plus

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• A self-starter who can work with a minimum amount of supervision
• Demonstrated abilities to resolve issues with Oracle database technologies including RDBMS, RMAN, SQLNET, etc.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve ERP application issues as they relate to the Oracle database technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve ERP application issues as they relate to the Oracle or Tomcat middle tier technologies
• Organizational and time management skills to manage multiple work streams and projects concurrently.
• Demonstrated ability to understand customer needs and provide quality service
• Demonstrated willingness to work flexible hours and rotate as an “on-call” troubleshooter
• A willingness and desire to learn new hardware/software systems consistent with duties
• Demonstrated service skills including:
o excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
o excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills
o ability to read, write and interpret documents such as operation/maintenance manuals, equipment specifications and procedure manuals
