JOB SUMMARY

The Director of Athletics and Student Life is responsible for providing strategic leadership and administrative oversight of the college’s intercollegiate athletic programs, intramural/recreational activities, and student life initiatives. The Director will champion student activities, enhance campus life, and foster a culture of inclusion, integrity, and excellence. The college offers a variety of athletic programs, including men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, and golf.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICIATIONS

  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree from an accredited college.  
  • A minimum of six (6) years is required in one or more of the following: progressive leadership experience in athletic administration, coaching, or student life.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NJCAA or equivalent collegiate athletic regulations and compliance standards.
  • Strong organizational, communication, budgeting, and interpersonal skills.
  • A strong commitment to a student-centered approach

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Athletic Program Administration and Oversight (40%)

  • Develop, implement, and enforce policies and procedures in compliance with college conference (TCCAA), and national governing body (NJCAA) regulations.
  • Lead the strategic planning and daily operations of the athletic department, including scheduling, staffing, compliance, game day operations and marketing.
  • Monitor the condition of CSCC athletic facilities and equipment and identify investments needed to keep college athletic infrastructure and resources up to date and comparable to those of peer institutions. 
  • Oversee training programs and other initiatives to ensure the safety of students, employees, fans, and community members participating in college athletic and recreation programs. 
  • Prepare, manage, and monitor the athletic department budget; pursue additional funding opportunities such as sponsorships and grants.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate coaching staff and athletic personnel; provide mentorship and foster a culture of excellence and collaboration.
  • Execute and support fundraising initiatives in support of athletic and recreational resource requirements in coordination with the college Advancement Office and VP of Student Affairs. 
  • Represent the college at athletic conferences, meetings, and public events; serving as the primary liaison to external athletic associations.
  • Ensure compliance with Title IX regulations.

Student Life and Intramural/Recreational Programs (30%)

  • Oversee a broad portfolio of student life activities, including leadership development programs, intramural sports, and wellness initiatives.
  • Coordinate recreational programs and ensure equitable access to athletic facilities for student use.
  • Collaborate with campus departments to enhance student activities and promote co-curricular learning.
  • Advocate for a vibrant, inclusive, and student-centered campus environment that supports personal growth and community building.

Enrollment and Retention Initiatives (25%)

  • Lead college coaches in developing strong strategic partnerships with athletic coaches and athletic programs of school systems in our service area and surrounding communities to support the college's strategic objective of developing broad, strong, strategic partnerships with feeder school systems. 
  • Partner with admissions and enrollment to recruit student athletes prioritizing recruitment and retention of student athletes from the college's service area and counties that directly border it.
  • Develop support systems that promote student-athlete academic success, retention, and graduation, including academic advising and life-skills programming.
  • Collaborate with faculty and student support services to ensure student-athletes receive necessary resources and interventions.
  • Use data-driven strategies to assess and improve student activities and retention through athletics and student life programs.

Non-Essential Functions (5%)

  • The appointee may be required to achieve additional skill, knowledge, or credential levels currently required or which in the future may be required by the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission of Colleges.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Proficiency in use of Google Suite and Microsoft Suite.
  • Community college experience preferred.
  • Position may require evening and weekend hours for athletic events and student activities.
  • Occasional travel is required for team supervision and conference obligations.

WORK ACTIVITIES & EQUIPMENT

Job responsibilities frequently involve working with personal computers and peripheral devices. Some tasks will require the use of equipment such as tables and projectors, which may weigh between 25-50 pounds. Additionally, assistance with the use of college sports equipment may be required.

JOB LOCATION

The position is an on-site role at the L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium, located on the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee. This will be the primary workplace, with athletic team travel and occasional travel to off-campus sites within the college’s five-county service area as needed.
