Job Summary

Reporting to the Adult Education Program Director, the ESL Teacher is responsible for teaching English language and literacy to adult learners with limited English proficiency according to Tennessee Adult Education ESL content standards and assessment competencies while accommodating individual learner’s needs and goals. In addition, this position will serve as lead for all ESL programs and assist the director with state initiates including ESL reporting, state meetings and development of other ESL teachers and materials.

Job Duties

• Follow the TN Division of Adult Education Assessment Policy for pre- and post-testing to assess and evaluate students to determine their progress and potential for advancement to the next National Reporting System (NRS) level utilizing the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS).

• Provide orientation for new ESL students including CASAS proctoring.

• Administer assessment, interpret scores, and advise students on their performance on the test.

• Provide instruction to a multi-level class in reading, writing, speaking, and listening for every lesson.

• Maintain student attendance and records of progress in accordance with the Division of Adult Education requirements.

• Participate in the retention and follow-up of students.

• Participate in local and state activities/staff development.

• Lead curriculum initiatives for the ESL teachers in compliance with state wide initiatives.

• Assist the director with state reporting requirements for ESL students.

• Work with ESL students for career pathways for integration into workforce training and/or degree pathways.

• Use a variety of instructional approaches, including integrating technology in the classroom to accommodate different learning styles and levels of functioning.

• Adhere to AE teaching standards/classroom requirements.

• Assist with recruitment, registration, orientation, and assessment as needed.

• Complete other assignments as directed by supervision. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution
• One (1) year of teaching experience in an ESL program, post-secondary, or adult education program

Preferred Qualifications

• Active Teacher’s License or Waiver
• ESL Certification
• Proficiency in language other than English

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Technology Skills: MS Office skills, Word, Excel, Outlook; videoconferencing software; digital records management systems; general operating systems and data information systems
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills demonstrating an ability to establish a positive relationship with staff and students.
• Knowledge of and ability to consistently apply TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) best practices
• Ability to travel to satellite class locations when necessary
• Able to work a split schedule, including up to two evenings per week
