Job Summary

The Student Intern will assist the Information Technology department with various cybersecurity, IT support, and security awareness initiatives. This role provides hands-on experience in IT security, risk management, and user training while supporting institutional cybersecurity efforts. The intern will gain valuable knowledge in information security principles, compliance requirements, and best practices in higher education IT environments.

This position is part-time and intended for enrolled students looking to gain real-world information security experience.

This position may have the opportunity to work remote within the state of Tennessee but with periodic visits to the TBR System Office (Nashville, TN) at the employee’s expense, and potential travel to Tennessee TBR colleges may be necessary.

Job Duties

  • 25% - Assist with security awareness training programs, including updating materials and supporting workshops. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Help monitor phishing simulation campaigns and analyze results under guidance. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Provide basic IT security support, such as assisting with security incident documentation and user inquiries. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Research and summarize emerging cybersecurity threats to support awareness initiatives. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Assist in maintaining institutional cybersecurity resources, including web content and training portals. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Perform administrative tasks and support IT security projects as needed. - (Marginal)

Minimum Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, pursuing a degree in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field with at least one year left until graduating. Preference will be given to students enrolled in a TBR institution.
• Basic knowledge of IT security concepts, phishing threats, and compliance standards.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cybersecurity awareness programs or IT security initiatives.
• Familiarity with phishing simulation tools, e-learning platforms, or risk assessment methodologies.
• Interest in pursuing a career in cybersecurity or information security management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Interest in cybersecurity, IT security, or risk management.
• Basic understanding of IT security principles and best practices.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic IT troubleshooting.
