Title: Peer Mentor

POSITION SUMMARY
The Peer Mentoring program at NSCC helps empower new students to make positive choices to maximize their student success. The mentoring program pairs new students with mentors who have committed to support and guide them through their first 15 credit hours. By becoming a peer mentor, students who have already proven that they are able to persist and overcome life obstacles to succeed can help new students to reach positive academic and personal goals. Mentors benefit by building connections, developing their professional experience, and being able to work on campus between class hours.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Take the lead in supporting new students through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship. Serve as a positive role model who strives for mutual respect. Build a relationship by planning and participating in scheduled contacts/activities together.

Help build motivation, set goals, and work toward accomplishing them. Refer to campus resources when required. Keep excellent records of communication with mentees. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Current NSCC student

Completed at least 6 credit hours towards a degree at any higher education institution

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
GPA of 2.5 or higher

Completed at least 6 credit hours towards a degree at Nashville State

Completed NSCC 1010 or another college success or freshman seminar class that qualifies to replace it

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Be familiar with Microsoft Office Suites. Have a drive to help fellow students to connect with the college community and to set goals that will further progress towards degree completion. Be a strong communicator who is also a good listener, punctual, reliable, and an outgoing student. Demonstrates enthusiasm about Nashville State Community College.

Rate of Pay: $13.00 per hour

Work Hours: Up to 10 hours per week
