Chattanooga State Community College is seeking qualified law enforcement professionals to join our Campus Police Department.

This is a sworn police officer position, not a security position. Officers protect students, faculty, staff, visitors, property, and facilities while performing professional law enforcement duties including patrol, emergency response, investigations, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, crisis response, and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

As a Police Officer 1, you will:

  • Patrol campus by foot, golf cart, or police vehicle.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Investigate crimes, suspicious activity, accidents, disturbances, and other incidents.
  • Protect people, property, and facilities.
  • Take appropriate enforcement action, including warnings, citations, arrests, and removal of individuals when legally authorized.
  • Respond to medical emergencies, fires, hazardous conditions, severe weather, threats, and other emergencies.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations and interview victims, witnesses, and involved persons.
  • Prepare accurate police reports and other official documentation.
  • Preserve and document evidence and investigative information.
  • Provide traffic control and law enforcement services for emergencies and special events.
  • Work with local, state, and federal law enforcement and emergency response agencies when appropriate.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, crisis response, and disaster planning.
  • Maintain proficiency with firearms, police equipment, communications systems, and other law enforcement technology.
  • Maintain Tennessee P.O.S.T. certification and complete required training.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of applicable Tennessee criminal and traffic laws.
  • Knowledge of criminal justice procedures and Uniform Crime Reporting requirements.
  • Strong report-writing, communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to assess situations and respond appropriately during emergencies.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional under stressful circumstances.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to operate police communications equipment, computers, mobile devices, and other law enforcement technology.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to work varying shifts based upon operational needs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position involves regular walking and standing, exposure to changing weather conditions, driving campus vehicles, responding to emergencies and potentially hazardous situations, wearing required police and protective equipment, carrying a firearm, some lifting and carrying, and working days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by operational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma or GED.

Three years of work experience in police work OR a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice.

Tennessee P.O.S.T. Certification, or certification from another state's police certifying agency with less than three (3) years' break in full-time law enforcement service upon the date of hire and no previous decertification as a law enforcement officer by a police certifying agency.

SELECTED APPLICANTS MUST

  • Submit fingerprint records through IdentoGO services as required by the Tennessee P.O.S.T. Commission.
  • Successfully complete a physical examination by a licensed physician. Examination cannot be dated more than six months prior to the applicable hiring requirement.
  • Be certified by a Tennessee licensed health care provider qualified in the psychiatric or psychological fields as being free from any impairment. Certification cannot be dated more than six months prior to the applicable hiring requirement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a college or university law enforcement environment.
  • Experience in community-oriented policing.
  • Criminal or administrative investigative experience.
  • Experience working with other law enforcement or emergency response agencies.
  • Experience with modern law enforcement technology and records systems.
