The Pryor Art Gallery Curator will create opportunities for internal and external members of the college community to experience visual arts through the display of a variety of artifacts and works of art.  They will develop and maintain all aspects of the Pryor Art Gallery and works of art acquired by the college. 

This is a 29 hour a week, part time position based at the Columbia Campus. 

Essential Functions

  • Negotiate for and acquire quality exhibits that will enhance the community’s awareness and appreciation of the visual arts and that will have appeal to a wide cross-section of the general public. 
  • Responsible for all aspects of an exhibit including but not limited to: budget, contracts, transport of exhibit, setup/removal, assist with marketing and promotion through varied media, artist receptions, and any purchases made for the permanent collection.
  • Participate in networking opportunities and grow relationships with artists, exhibitors, and community to cultivate support. 
  • In addition to maintenance of physical space and security, establish processes for electronic database maintenance and cataloguing (art inventory, visitors to gallery, etc).
  • Display and label art from the permanent collection across campuses.
  • Coordinate with grants office for application and execution of grants.
  • Ensure art is appropriately reported, inventoried, etc. for insurance purposes and communicate with the state office responsible for insurance.
  • Coordinate with initiatives on campus that involve art and utilize art acquired by the college to benefit the college community.

Supplemental Functions

  • Support and assist with initiatives within the Office of Advancement.
  • Remain current in the field of art to enhance effectiveness.
  • Apprise oneself of activities, programs, and goals of the College. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Training, and Experience Preferred

  • Degree in Art History or related area
  • Experience as curator or in related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and/or training in the area of visual arts.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work effectively within a complex organization dedicated to working with and respecting others.
  • Computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Self-starting, entrepreneurial and creative in formulating and executing ideas, opportunities, and strategies for developing the use of the Pryor Art Gallery.
  • Work effectively as a team member.
  • High level of energy, initiative and creativity.
  • Decision-making and negotiating skills.

Working Conditions

  • Normal sitting and movement in an office environment.
  • Visual and hand usage of a computer.
  • Lifting and climbing when putting up/taking down exhibits.
  • Varying work hours including days, evenings and weekends.

Hiring Salary Range $29,810- $35,770

This part-time position is based at the Columbia, TN Campus, and is not eligible for full benefits.
