Title: Student Help: Title III Peer Mentor / Coach

Job Summary

This is a part-time student position funded by Title III IDEAS Grant. Peer mentors/coaches are integrated into advising center or other campus offices, to assist professional advisors or student success coaches and faculty/staff with supporting students at Southwest.

Mentors might handle referrals to campus resources, study skills coaching, or pre-registration education, which frees up professional coaches and advisors to focus on complex advising cases. Peer mentors may be “on call” for a set number of hours each week, to handle referred and walk-in students. Or, programs may require peer mentors to hold several meetings each term with students, either one-on-one or in groups.

Job Duties

  • Attend Peer Coaching training sessions
  • Engage in two HIPs (work-based learning and e-portfolio development)
  • Provide information concerning campus resources, activities, and services
  • Provide encouragement for peers to stay in college and finish their program through out-of-classroom engagement with touchpoints
  • Maintain assigned caseload of students; accurately documenting students’ stories and making appropriate referrals for academic and student support services
  • As a role model, display appropriate social behavior and skills
  • Maintain courteous, friendly, and cooperative interactions with peers and staff
  • Maintain confidentiality of personal information, such as contact information
  • Maintain weekly communication with assigned peers with an openness to on-call support and small group support during critical advising milestones

Minimum Qualifications

  • Southwest Tennessee Community College Student who has completed at least 12 semester hours and GPA of 3.0
  • Student must be in good academic and behavioral standing
