Title: Student Success Advisor, School of Health Sciences (Grant-funded)
POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for providing program advising and holistic supports for identified students specifically pursuing a degree or certificate in a healthcare related field. This position is currently funded by the Tennessee Board of Regents’ Relational Advising and Peer Mentoring grant through June 30, 2025 and is eligible for renewal thereafter.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides health sciences advising across all campuses. Builds relationships with assigned students to help them achieve their identified goals and objectives as they apply to and are enrolled in a health sciences program. Reviews student progress, including tracking and maintaining records of student conversations and use of recommended academic support service referrals and opportunity programs. Assists selected students in identifying factors that contribute to a lack of academic progress, helps students examine alternatives and applies appropriate retention strategies to support students’ efforts.
Strategizes with faculty and staff as needed to improve and/or support student success. Supports and participates in annual recruitment and enrollment of new students by providing pre-advising and/or career advising for selected programs, coordinates campus events for potential health sciences students, attends career fairs to promote Nashville State health sciences programs and participates in other promotional/recruitment activities. Utilizes an SIS student records system and be able to function within a computerized office environment.
Attends monthly TBR Relational Advising meetings and all other related trainings. Adheres to the approved guidelines of the Relational Advising and Peer Mentoring grant awarded by the Tennessee Board of Regents, including administering surveys, assessing and reporting data, fulfilling reporting requirements, ensuring complete and appropriate expenditures of all grant funds and ensuring all grant activities are closed, finalized or transitioned at the conclusion of the grant. Participates in ongoing relevant professional development and professional organizations.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree with at least two years’ experience working in a higher education setting with a diverse student body delivering direct support/services to students; OR
Master’s degree in education, higher education or closely related field with or without direct work experience in a higher education setting with a diverse student body delivering direct support/services to students
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree from an accredited institution
Prior work experience at a community college
Prior academic advising or student coaching experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to develop a comprehensive understanding of the health sciences programs offered at Nashville State, including application requirements, courses of study and clinical experience expectations. Knowledge of current ideas, research and practices pertaining to the areas of responsibility. Ability to manage a caseload system of advising. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information. Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage competing tasks and priorities while maintaining complete and accurate records. Proficient Microsoft Office and database management skills. Ability to build effective working relationship at all levels across the organization. Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
