Job Summary

Peer Mentors are currently enrolled Southwest Tennessee Community College students that provide mentorship, engagement, and structured support to students in the Saluqi Scholars Program (First-Time Freshmen Support) and the Welcome Back Program (Reentry Student Support).

They assist in staffing Success Hubs, facilitating workshops, and helping students develop essential skills for academic persistence and success. Peer Mentors serve as a bridge between students and campus resources, offering peer-led guidance, community-building, and academic encouragement.

Job Duties

  • Reports to the Assistant Director of the Office of Academic Intervention.
  • Works with the Student Success Navigators
  • Provides mentorship and engagement for students in the Welcome Back Program.
  • Provides mentorship and engagement for students in the Saluqi Scholars Program.
  • Facilitates peer-to-peer engagement through structured check-ins, inviting mentees to attend study groups, workshops, and Success Hub events to build academic confidence.
  • Staffs the Success Hubs, offering peer-to-peer academic support and connecting students to campus resources.
  • Assists with New Student Orientation, Saluqi Scholars Convocation, and other first-semester programming.
  • Assists with Welcome Back Orientations and reentry student programming.
  • Facilitates peer-led study groups and workshops on notetaking, time management, communication, digital literacy, and academic success strategies.
  • Encourages first-semester students to utilize tutoring, advising, and career services.
  • Reinforces QEP competencies through peer-led study groups and workshops.
  • Encourages engagement with QEP learning resources and tracks participation in peer mentoring activities.
  • Encourages reentry students to engage with tutoring, advising, career services, and other wrap-around support services.
  • Tracks mentee progress in the CRM system (Slate) and communicates challenges to Navigators and Assistant Director.
  • Participates in ongoing training and professional development for Peer Mentors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled student at Southwest Tennessee Community College.
  • Minimum institutional GPA of 3.0.
  • Completed at least 12 credit hours at Southwest.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to build peer relationships and mentor first-semester students.
  • At least two terms (including summer) remain until graduation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mentoring, tutoring, or leading student engagement activities.
  • Familiarity with campus resources and student success strategies.
  • Experience working with a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) platform such as Slate.
  • Prior participation in the Saluqi Scholars Program or other student support initiatives.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Understanding of campus resources and student support services.
  • Ability to facilitate study groups and peer-led workshops.
  • Ability to mentor and support students returning from academic suspension or stopping out.
  • Strong knowledge of academic policies, probation/suspension procedures, and campus resources.
  • Ability to facilitate study groups and workshops focused on academic reintegration.
  • Effective communication and leadership skills.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
