Surgical Technology Clinical Coordinator Instructor

This is a full-time, Academic Year Appointment reporting to the Dean of Health Sciences. Official workstation may change from campus and center dependent upon needs and demands of the Surgical Technology program. Duties include working with the Director of Surgical Technology for coordination of student classroom and clinical field experiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To devote an equivalent of 37.5 hours of work per week
  • Arrange, manage, and document all clinical site preceptor training.
  • Help maintain files on all clinical adjunct/preceptors.
  • Establish clinical sites and manage all required documentation for site and program.
  • Coordinate student schedules with clinical sites.
  • Ensure that all students meet clinical site requirements including:

-Vaccinations

-Clinical Site Orientations (e.g.TCPS)

-Ensure hours and skill sets outlined by program are obtained by each student.

  • Maintain student files on clinical site requirements.
  • Work cooperatively with hospitals to provide optimum clinical experience.
  • Meet with clinical sites in regard to student issues that occur during a clinical

-Work with clinical site to prevent further issues.

  • Mediate between clinical site and Surgical Technology Program

-Clinical site inspection

-Determine the number of students that can be facilitated at each scheduled clinical.

  • Ensure that clinical sites are meeting the minimum competencies required for all students

-Review student and preceptor evaluations

-Advise clinical sites of any changes in competency requirements for the student.

  • Recruit additional clinical sites.
  • Initiate and assist with student evaluations and competencies.
  • Maintain clinical competencies.
  • Participate in planning, developing, implementing and evaluating the Surgical Technology curriculum.
  •  Revise and develop curriculum in cooperation with colleagues; assist in preparation of schedules and in selection of textbooks (including e-textbooks when appropriate).
  • Participate in development of policies and standards for the Surgical Technology Program.
  • Responsible for directing, evaluating and reporting student progress toward course objectives and for the periodic review and updating of course material. 
  • Become certified in and fully use the course management system for all classes (e.g. eLearn)
  • Be trained and become certified to teach online classes
  • Utilize technology in classroom and lab instruction.
  • Participate in committee work at all levels including the department, division and the College.
  • Participate in meetings of the Advisory Committee for the Surgical Technology Program.
  • Flexibility to teach evenings/weekends and/or off-campus courses as needed (requires the use of personal vehicle).
  • Practice a learner-centered educational philosophy and redesign courses to include research-based learning strategies including service-learning opportunities, learning communities, critical thinking skills, co-operative learning, and reading across the curriculum.
  • Develop web-enhanced courses for delivery in technology-enhanced classrooms/labs (such as Zoom), online or in a hybrid mode.
  • Work with colleagues to assess the effectiveness of courses, analyze the results, develop and implement improvement plans, and document this information each semester in the form prescribed by DSCC.
  • Participate in professional development and maintain membership in an appropriate regional, state and/or national organization related to your teaching at DSCC.
  • Assist with the identification and mentoring of adjunct instructors.
  • Advise students, maintain regular office hours, and participate in college life and committee work of the College.
  • Willingness to acquire software certifications as needed.
  • Assist in grant writing as needed.
  • Actively communicate with colleagues and students using email, voice mail, text and other electronic means. Normally, responses are expected in no more than 72 hours.
  • Be trained and certified as a Master Advisor.
  • Maintain a workload of a DSCC full time faculty member at the equivalent of 30 teaching load equivalency per academic year.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Classroom, lab, clinical site and office work; travel will be required for college and/or program activities. Must be able to lift 40lbs. Insignificant effort other than normal movement. Minimal Hazard/Exposure: Standard office settings. Work space will have environmental controls to assure health and comfort.

Required Qualifications:

  • Credentialed in the field of surgical technology through a national certification program that is accredited by the National Commission on Certifying Agencies (NCCA).
  • Be a graduate of an education program in surgical technology accredited by nationally recognized programmatic accreditation agency.
  • Three years of documented experience, either in operating room scrub role or as an instructor in surgical technology, or combination of both within the past five years.
  • Possess knowledge of the curriculum and program’s evaluation of student learning and performance.
  • Must be qualified by education and experience, and must be effective in teaching the subjects assigned.
  • Ability to communicate well in oral and written English.
  • Actively communicate with colleagues using email and other electronic means.
  • Commitment to teaching and providing quality education for students.
  • Qualities of integrity, initiative, and good judgment with high ethical standards.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals and/or groups.

Minimum Requirements of Education and Experience:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Teaching experience.

Salary range-$42,087-$50,500
