Title: Technical Director and Auditorium Manager
POSITION SUMMARY
The Technical Director and Auditorium Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of the theatre facility, black box, loading dock/scene shop, art gallery, and auditorium. This position supports academic areas of the college, manages college events, builds a performing arts season, and oversees bookings of the Art Gallery. The role involves supervising staff and student workers, maintaining technical equipment, and ensuring the smooth operation of all theatre-related facilities.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and schedule all events using the theater facilities, black box, scene shop, art gallery and auditorium. Oversee technical aspects of all productions and events in these spaces. Supervise student workers. Order and maintain supplies and equipment. Build and manage a performing arts season, coordinating rentals and partnerships with community organizations. Operate or oversee the operation of theatrical lighting and sound systems, as well as various equipment, including office technology, specialized theatre equipment and power tools to support set construction and artistic projects.
Instruct others in the safe use of theatre facilities and equipment. Manage bookings of the Art Gallery and assist with art exhibits. Maintain accurate records of attendance, inventory and maintenance. Coordinate with the college's grant management office to identify and apply for grants for the performing arts series. Perform general office duties and attend required meetings. Support academic areas such as music, music technology and future programs.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree (BA/BFA)
Three (3) years’ experience in theater, technical theatre, sound design, audio production, lighting or a related field
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree (MA/MFA) in theater, technical theatre or equivalent
Experience with academic theater
Experience in lighting design, set design, costume design, makeup design and scenic painting
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to organize, plan, and supervise all phases of a theatre program. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for dealing with the public and maintaining effective working relationships. Strong leadership and supervisory skills. Ability to work independently and accomplish tasks despite interruptions. Proficiency in operating theatrical equipment and tools. Ability to perform tasks involving standing, bending, climbing ladders, stooping and lifting objects up to 50 pounds. Knowledge of safety protocols in theatre operations. Ability to work with a range of materials, such as paints, varnishes, glues, plywood and plastic foam while adhering to safety protocols.
Working knowledge of ETC Ion lighting console, DMX and addressing, sound systems and microphones, a single-purchase counterweight system, and related theatrical technology. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to maintain a public calendar and social media. Ability to represent the college in professional settings. Critical thinking skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff, renters, media, and the public. Record keeping, budgeting, and reporting skills. Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by events and productions.
