Title: Temporary - Police Officer (Pool)
POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs a variety of police duties such as patrolling the assigned area(s) to detect/deter crime and arrest violators to ensure security and safety people and property.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Patrols the campus by foot, bicycle, or motor vehicle. Investigates suspected crimes, report findings, and arrest suspected individuals. Testifies in a court of legal proceedings. Investigates accidents involving persons or property, report probable cause of accidents, pursue an appropriate course of action, and ensure that all incidents and arrest activities are properly documented. Proficiently operates law enforcement equipment (including lethal and non-lethal weapons necessary in the performance of required duties). Keeps records and prepares reports (offense, arrest, fire system, emergency phones, alarm systems, and mechanical equipment). Provides escorts and/or makes bank deposits or special mail deliveries. Ensures traffic control and enforcement. Checks doors and locks and responds to lockouts. Identifies potential security-related conditions and takes the lead in problem-solving through partnerships to develop prevention strategies. Provides safety, crime prevention, and community policing information to contacts over the course of patrol duties. First responder for all emergency calls to include but not be limited to the following: alarms (fire, panic, holdup), hazardous material spills and leaks, traffic crashes, criminal activity in progress, assistance for injured/sick, and crimes in progress. May conduct photographing; conduct photo lineups and additional investigative duties as necessary. Develops rapport with the community. Performs field stops and interviews. May represent the department at college meetings or functions. Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
A high school diploma or GED
Current Tennessee Post certification or ability to obtain certification immediately upon hire
Valid driver’s license
Ability to pass a psychological examination and a medical examination
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
An Associate’s degree in criminal justice, law enforcement or related field
Prior law enforcement experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Good customer service skills. Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student population. Demonstrated self-restraint in challenging and/or difficult situations. Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
Rate of Pay: Varies by location
Work Hours: Up to 28 hours per week and may include days, evenings and weekends
