The Vice President for Academic Affairs serves as the chief academic officer (CAO) for Columbia State Community College and is a member of the President's Cabinet.  The Vice President provides dynamic and strategic leadership for the College with emphasis on the growth and development of the academic area.  Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Development, implementation and growth of a successful academic program that is responsive to the needs of students, community, and the regional workforce for degree-certificates leading to career entry positions or university transfer programs.
  • Promotion and support of excellence and innovation for learning-centered academic programs, instruction, and services that align with changing educational/workplace competencies
  • Recruitment and retention of faculty and staff who are committed to student success in a caring and engaging environment that is conducive to outstanding teaching and learning in and out of the classroom
  • Committed to the use of data for academic and college planning and decision making.
  • Advancement of the academic implementation of the College's strategic plan.
  • Maintain, in concert with the Executive Leadership, a collaborative approach to college administration that solicits and respects views and ideas of others for understanding and decision making.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides college leadership for the development, implementation, and strengthening of academic programs and services.
  2. Provides campus oversight for academic programs that result in a learning environment conducive to student development and success.
  3. Develops and oversees, in concert with Academic leadership, the development and management of budgets for academic areas.
  4. Assesses and recommends staffing needs and works with administrators in recruiting, hiring, and evaluating with an emphasis on maintaining diversity within the academic areas.
  5. Promote faculty and staff professional development programs and opportunities that include diverse instructional methodologies and communications techniques for student success.  
  6. Recommends faculty for promotion and tenure.
  7. Reviews, evaluates, and recommends faculty and staff for educational opportunities and continuation or termination of contracts.
  8. Serves as liaison for the academic with appropriate staff in higher education agencies, including the Tennessee Board of Regents and Tennessee Higher Education Commission.
  9. Serves along with the Executive Cabinet to provide leadership that assures continued compliance with criteria for accreditation of the academic services areas by relevant agencies, including the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
  10. Develops, recommends, interprets and assures compliance in the academic areas with Tennessee Board of Regents, Tennessee Commission on Higher Education, and Columbia State policies and procedures.
  11. Assures the integrity of the academic information in the college catalog, course schedules and other publications.
  12. Facilitates articulation of courses and programs with other postsecondary institutions and area high schools.
  13. Promotes partnerships with community businesses, agencies and other organizations.
  14. Fosters collaborative efforts with K-12 education and other higher education organizations.
  15. Develops, monitors, and maintains effective processes and procedures that support academic involvement in enrolling and retaining students.
  16. Oversees a course scheduling process that aligns with the curriculum needs of students and that is budgetarily effective. 
  17. Fosters innovation and continuous improvement, teamwork, and high-end student and customer service within areas of responsibility.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Ensures that annual institution profiles, financial reports and five-year reports are completed, submitted, and filed on campus before submission to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
  2. Assists with the development of Tennessee Higher Education Commission Performance Funding Five-Year Plan and works closely with the director of institutional effectiveness to prepare and submit annual reports.
  3. Represents the college as appropriate by participation in community activities and groups.
  4. Assists with special projects and assignments and represents the President as needed.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:

  1. Earned Doctorate from an accredited institution and five years educational administrative experience at a level comparable to a Dean or Associate Vice President, preferably in a community college setting.
  2. At least three years teaching experience, preferably in a community college setting.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, and WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

    1. Demonstrated understanding of statewide systems of higher education and the philosophy under girding a comprehensive community college.
    2. Demonstrated effectiveness in higher education administration.
    3. Demonstrated experience in curriculum development, teaching, application of innovations in instruction, and emerging instructional technologies.
    4. Understanding and capable of applying collaborative management and leadership principles and philosophy.
    5. Demonstrated leadership in personnel management and the ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the general public.
    6. Demonstrated knowledge and ability in planning, evaluation, and continuous improvement systems and the use of data in decision making.
    7. Demonstrated knowledge and efficiency in budgeting.
    8. Ability to communicate effectively in written and spoken English.
    9. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of effective student success practices especially as it pertains to academics
    10. Commitment to innovation and continuous improvement, teamwork, high-end student and customer service, and the pursuit of greatness.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Normal sitting and movement in an office environment.
  2. Visual and hand usage of computer.
  3. Requires travel to Tennessee Board of Regents offices, off-campus instructional locations and other areas for meetings and other job-related activities.

Hiring Salary Range:  $117,200 - $152,350

This position is based at the Columbia, TN Campus.
